Payments

The payment journey, step by step.

The documented KonetPay flow collects naira by bank transfer through a hosted checkout. In the current 21CTL release this journey is exercised in TEST mode only, so no page should imply that production collection is already enabled.

  1. 1

    You initialise a payment

From your server, with your secret key, you send the amount in kobo, the customer’s email and your own unique reference (up to 30 characters). You can also pass the customer’s name and phone number and flat metadata such as an order id.

You choose who bears the fee: you (the default) or the customer, in which case it is added on top.

  2. 2

    You redirect to hosted checkout

KonetPay returns a checkout link. Send the customer’s browser there. They never enter payment details on your site, and you never handle them.

  3. 3

The customer pays by bank transfer

The checkout shows the transfer details. When the customer is done they are redirected to your callback address with the reference and status in the address.

That redirect is a signal for your interface. It is not proof of payment, so never credit an order from it.

  4. 4

    You confirm before you fulfil

Use at least one of the two independent checks below. Using both is the most robust.

Confirming a payment

Two ways to be certain.

A signed webhook

KonetPay posts the event to your endpoint with a signature header. Check the signature, the event type and the status, and confirm the amount and currency match your order.

  • Events: payment.initiated, payment.successful, payment.failed
  • Signed with your secret key for that mode
  • Up to three attempts, five minutes apart, so make your handler idempotent

Verify by reference

Ask KonetPay directly for the transaction status with your secret key. The response mirrors the webhook payload, including paid amount, fee and net amount.

  • Only give value when the status is successful
  • Check that amount and currency match your order
  • A lighter status check works with a public key for checkout pages

What to expect

Clear about what is available.

Documented provider capability

  • Provider-documented collections in Nigerian naira (NGN)
  • Bank transfer as the payment method
  • Hosted checkout and a documented API
  • Transaction verification and signed webhooks
  • Static virtual accounts
  • 21CTL TEST workspace and integration preparation; provider calls remain disconnected until approved

Not available yet

  • Other payment methods
  • Currencies other than naira

Production settlement is outside the current 21CTL release. For anything not listed here, ask the team before you plan around it.

Try the whole flow in test mode.

Use the TEST-mode workspace to validate the flow before any separate production-readiness process.
